Jayson while agree that spammers suck a lot of ordinary day to day marketers also take short cuts and use opt out policies. It wins them short term gains but in the long run their conversion rates go down. This is a real problem!

spammers can still make money even at that low of a conversion rate. Remember although annoying as hell, they have bills to pay like the rest of us, and are only trying to get by in life. But permission based emails are definitely more ethical, if you don't want to recieve any more emails from them you just opt out! Problem solved!

Thats a really good stat! Go for twitter and forget about emails. I bet you that everyone will be able to deal with customers and friends a whole lot easier. Why? The reason being is because you never get spam with twitter and the max amount of characters is 160.
Nice little write. Just think about that for a little bit.
Keep up the good work

Bang on the money there. Spam sucks!.
All Autoresonder systems should at least send a confirmation email. I see some are getting away with it, and you end up being on someones rubbish list for ages without even choosing to be. Cheers for the great blog.

I hate spam with passion and would never consider taking part in such an activity. Anyway with such a poor conversion rate whats the point?
I think its a very powerful move to inform people that they can opt out anytime they want. It just gets rid of one more barrier.
Good point made by Nathan above. It is really important to keep in touch with your list at least once a month.

I catch myself even getting upset about receiving an update from someone I've opted in to if it's been so long that I've forgotten about them.

People guard their inbox like they do their SS# these days. And who can blame them?

Integrity is at the heart of every true internet entrepreneur and it's up to all of us individually to play by the ethical standards.

I've been using permission based marketing online for 8 or 9 years. It's very effective stuff. Especially using segmenting like you mentioned.

It's easy to build up thousands of subscribers with focused marketing and they are actually eager and grateful to get your emails. Unfortunately now you have to watch what words you use in your emails even to your double opt-in lists because of filters.

Permission based lists are the only ethical way to do business online. Having a way to opt out should my customers change their mind is also a built in factor with all my emails.

Approval to send one email is implied when you give your email addy online in exchange for a free report or information, or when you use my ffa site, but to bombard folks with your ads based upon that one contact is stepping into the realm of spam and to be avoided if you want to stay in business on the internet.

It makes so much sense NOT to spam!! It is so annoying! Marketers should just concentrate on building a list via opt in! Not spam! Marketing is great when you are being marketed to by choice!!!

I don't know how spammers even get that many responses. If I don't know your name or have not signed up for info even related to your email, you don't even get a second thought. And how about the emails with a subject line of winning the lottery or other offers of giving me large sums of money. Who opens any of those?
